In a Joint Statement of the RP-MNLF Panels dated 3 January 1987, both parties “agreed to continue discussion of the proposal for the grant of full autonomy to Mindanao, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Palawan subject to democratic processes.” The Statement also said that the Government Panel agreed to convey to the President the MNLF’s request for the suspension of the provisions on autonomy contained in the draft Constitution. Signatories of the Joint Statement were Philippine Government Panel Chairman Senator Aquilino Pimentel, MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari and OIC Secretary General Shariffuddin Pirzada (as witness).
